Transport is responsible for significant emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Although significant improvements in efficiency have helped keep these emissions down on a per kilometer basis the only real way to keep emissions under control is to use alternative fuels.

One such alternative fuel is biodiesel. Biodiesel is a replacement for fossil diesel and can be used in any diesel vehicle with no modification needed to the engine provided the fuel is manufactured correctly.

In the UK our main oil crop is oilseed rape. REFA have worked with Greenergy (www.greenergy.com) to create the opportunity for farmers to grow oilseed rape for the biodiesel market without having to incur the financial penalty that has previously been associated with production for the energy market as against the food market.

The oilseed rape is grown under the 'Field To Forecourt' contract following biodiversity guidelines. Production following these guidelines allows the resulting fuel to be marketed with environmental credentials that some other biodiesels may not be able to meet.
